What does “the zone of genius” mean?
“The zone of genius” is an area in which you naturally excel and that allows you to achieve professional feats with disconcerting ease and enjoyment. In fact, there are said to be four zones: the zone of incompetence, competence, excellence, and genius.
Discover your “zone of genius”
Identify your passions and interests: through career self-assessment questionnaires, skills assessments, or certain tests
Recognize your talents and strengths: by asking your colleagues and loved ones about the qualities they see in you
Reflect on your past successes: keep a journal of your achievements by analyzing the skills and circumstances that contributed to those successes
Find your zone and stay there!
Practice “thoughtless” “no”: learn to say “no” if a colleague offers you a project that’s very important to the company but eats into the time you’d set aside for a project more aligned with your goals. Avoid getting sidetracked by activities that don’t contribute to your zone of genius
Accept support: accept support from others in areas outside your zone of genius—for example, by delegating tasks that don’t align with your strengths, whenever possible
shift from “Newtonian time” to “Einsteinian time”: Stop hiding behind the excuse of “not having enough time.” Living in “Einsteinian time” means recognizing that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day and that making the most of that time is essential for success
